About Mbabane
Mbabane is the capital of Eswatini (formerly Swaziland) — one of the smallest countries in Africa, nestled between South Africa and Mozambique. The city is located at an altitude of 1,200 meters in the Dlangeni Hills and offers a pleasantly cool climate that is markedly different from the hot South African lowlands. The landmark of the region is Sibebe Rock — the largest exposed granite rock in the world, larger than Uluru. The hike to the summit (3-4 hours) rewards with a breathtaking panorama over the Ezulwini Valley, the Valley of the Kings, where the royal palace and the national museum are located. Eswatini is one of the last absolute monarchies in Africa, and the culture is vibrant: The Umhlanga Reed Dance (August/September), where thousands of young women carry reeds to the royal palace, and the Incwala ceremony (December/January) are spectacular cultural events that visitors can experience up close. From Mbabane, the Mlilwane Wildlife Sanctuary (walking safari with zebras and antelopes), the Mantenga Cultural Village, and the craft markets of Ezulwini are accessible — an authentic African experience away from the tourist crowds.
