About Libreville

Libreville, the capital of Gabon, is located directly on the equator on the Atlantic coast and is one of the wealthiest cities in Africa — financed by oil, manganese, and tropical timber. The name Free City dates back to 1849 when freed slaves were settled here. The city offers an unusual mix: modern glass facades and luxury hotels stand next to Marché Mont-Bouët, the largest market in Central Africa, where tropical fruits, cassava leaves, and hand-carved masks are sold. The Boulevard du Bord de Mer features palm-lined avenues and sea views. Gabon has the highest forest coverage in Africa at nearly 90%. Pointe Denis, a peninsula 20 minutes by boat, offers palm beaches, sea turtle nesting sites, and whale watching (July-October). Libreville's nightlife is legendary in Central Africa: live music, maquis (open-air bars), and the blend of Gabonese, Cameroonian, and Congolese culture create a unique atmosphere. The Lopé National Park (UNESCO) with gorillas and forest elephants is a domestic flight away.

Visit maquis — open-air bars with grilled fish and beer are the Gabonese nightlife.

Yellow fever vaccination required — no entry without vaccination proof. Vaccinate at least 10 days before travel.
