About Moroni

Moroni is the capital of the Comoros, a volcanic island archipelago in the Indian Ocean between Madagascar and Mozambique. The city lies at the foot of Mount Karthala — one of the most active volcanoes in the world with one of the largest craters (3 km in diameter), which dominates the skyline. The old town (Medina) of Moroni resembles Zanzibar or Yemen with its narrow alleys, carved wooden doors, and the old Friday mosque (Ancienne Mosquée du Vendredi). Arab, French, African, and Malagasy influences merge here to create a unique culture. The Volo Volo market is the vibrant center: vanilla, ylang-ylang, cloves, and tropical fruits are piled alongside colorful fabrics. The Comoros are one of the world's largest producers of ylang-ylang oil (for the perfume industry) and vanilla. The distilleries on Grande Comore can be visited — a fragrant experience. The underwater world off Moroni is spectacular: the coelacanth, a living fossil, was rediscovered here. Coral reefs, sea turtles, and untouched dive sites make the Comoros a hidden gem for divers.
