About Niamey
Niamey is the capital of Niger and a city on the edge of the Sahara, which, despite extreme poverty, radiates surprising dignity and hospitality. The city of 1.3 million stretches along both banks of the Niger River, and the Kennedy Bridge, which connects the two sides, offers one of the most spectacular views of West Africa at sunset: golden light over the wide river, fishing pirogues, and the silhouette of the city. The Musée National Boubou Hama is one of the best museums in West Africa: set on a vast site, it showcases the cultures of the Hausa, Tuareg, Djerma, and Fulani with traditional houses, crafts, and a zoo featuring Sahel animals. The Grand Marché and Petit Marché are the trading centers: Tuareg silver jewelry, leather goods, indigo fabrics, and spices. The Grande Mosquée de Niamey, built in 1970 with Libyan assistance, dominates the skyline with its minaret. The Centre Culturel Franco-Nigérien and the growing art scene showcase a creative Niamey beyond the images of crisis. **Note:** Niger has been in an unstable political situation since the military coup in 2023.
