About Nanning
Nanning is the capital of the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region in southwestern China and is referred to as the "Green City" (Lucheng) due to its lush tropical vegetation. The city on the Yong River is near the Vietnamese border and serves as the economic and cultural center of the Zhuang, the largest ethnic minority in China with over 16 million members. The Qingxiu Mountain Park in the city center offers 14 square kilometers of tropical gardens, Buddhist pagodas, and the Longxiang Temple. From the summit, there is a panoramic view over the sea of houses to the tropical hills on the horizon. The park is Nanning's green lung and is popular among locals for hiking and Tai Chi. The Detian Waterfall at the Vietnamese border, about 240 km southwest of Nanning, is the largest cross-border waterfall in Asia and the fourth largest in the world. The 200-meter-wide cascades plunge amidst karst rocks — on the other side lies Vietnam with the Ban Gioc Waterfall. The karst landscape around Nanning resembles the more famous formations in Guilin but is less touristy. The Yiling Cave, 25 km to the north, is one of the largest and most beautiful limestone caves in southern China. The ASEAN Trade Summit is held annually in Nanning, making the city a gateway for trade and travel to Southeast Asia.
