About Bishkek

Bishkek, the capital of Kyrgyzstan, is one of the most underrated cities in Central Asia — a green, relaxed metropolis at the foot of the Tian Shan mountains, where Soviet architecture meets nomadic culture and the snow-capped peaks rise directly behind the plane trees of the wide boulevards. The city doesn’t have a big name, no iconic landmark — and that is exactly its charm. Ala-Too Square with the Manas statue is the starting point for explorations. The Osh Bazaar, one of the largest markets in Central Asia, is a sensory overload: spices, kurut (dried yogurt balls), felt hats, and the hustle and bustle of the vendors. Bishkek's greatest asset is nature: the Ala-Archa Gorge, just 40 minutes from the city center, offers alpine hikes with glacier views. Lake Issyk-Kul, the fourth largest mountain lake in the world, is located 4 hours to the east. The café scene is booming: young Kyrgyz mix kumys (mare's milk) with flat white, and in the parks, retirees play chess under the plane trees. Soviet mosaics, brutalist architecture, and the warm hospitality of the descendants of nomads make Bishkek unique.
