About Gibraltar

Gibraltar is a British Overseas Territory at the southern tip of the Iberian Peninsula — only 6.7 square kilometers in size, but with a history and identity that far exceed its size. The iconic Rock of Gibraltar (426 m) has been known since ancient times as one of the Pillars of Hercules and dominates the strait between Europe and Africa. Main Street connects British pubs, fish and chips shops, and red telephone boxes with a Mediterranean flair — a surreal mix of England and Spain. The border crossing from Spain is unique: one walks across the runway of the airport, which runs right through the area. The famous Barbary macaques live on the rock — the only wild monkeys in Europe. According to legend, Gibraltar will remain British as long as the monkeys live there. St. Michael's Cave is an impressive stalactite cave inside the rock, which is now used as a concert hall. From the top of the rock, there is a breathtaking view over the strait: on clear days, one can see the African coast of Morocco, just 14 kilometers away. The Great Siege Tunnels from the 18th century and the Moorish Castle from the 8th century testify to Gibraltar's strategic importance.
