About Fort-de-France

Fort-de-France, the capital of Martinique, is the cultural heart of the French Caribbean — a city where Creole lifestyle and French savoir-vivre merge into something unique. Fort Saint-Louis, an imposing fortress from the 17th century at the harbor, gives the city its name and still watches over the bay. The Bibliotheque Schölcher is Martinique's architectural jewel: a colorful iron frame building in the Romanesque-Byzantine style, built in 1893 for the World Exhibition in Paris and shipped piece by piece across the Atlantic to Martinique. Named after Victor Schölcher, who enforced the abolition of slavery in France in 1848. The Grand Marche and the Marche aux Epices (spice market) are Fort-de-France's aromatic center: vanilla, nutmeg, Colombo spice mix, fresh tropical fruits, and Rhum Agricole — Martinique's rum is distilled from fresh sugarcane juice (not from molasses like most rums) and carries an AOC designation like French wine. Mont Pelee in the north of the island is an active volcano, whose eruption in 1902 completely destroyed the city of Saint-Pierre and killed 30,000 people — the ruins are now a moving open-air museum. The beaches in the south (Anse d'Arlet, Les Salines) are among the most beautiful in the Caribbean.
