About Tonga

Tonga is the last kingdom of the Pacific — an archipelago of 170 islands, of which only 36 are inhabited, scattered over 700,000 square kilometers of the South Sea. As the only Pacific country that has never been colonized, Tonga has an unbroken monarchy for over 1,000 years and a culture that combines pride, hospitality, and deep religiosity. The Vava'u island group in the north is Tonga's jewel: a protected natural harbor surrounded by 50 small limestone islands with white sandy beaches, mangrove forests, and crystal-clear lagoons. From July to October, humpback whales migrate to the warm waters of Vava'u to give birth to their calves — and Tonga is one of the few places in the world where you can legally swim with them. Encountering a 15-meter-long humpback whale in the clear water is a life-changing experience. Tongatapu, the main island, is home to the Ha'amonga 'a Maui — the Stonehenge of the Pacific: a megalithic gate made of coral stones, built around 1200 AD and still mysterious today. The blowholes on the southern coast force seawater through natural lava tubes up to 30 meters into the air, and the royal tombs (Langi) showcase the burial sites of the Tu'i Tonga dynasty. The Ha'apai group in the middle of the archipelago is the most original Tonga: Here, the Bounty mutiny stranded in 1789, and today you will find deserted sandy beaches, turtle nesting sites, and a silence that is only interrupted by the rustling of palm trees and the calls of tropical birds.

5 travel tips for Tonga

Insider knowledge that makes your holiday better.

Book whale swimming in Vava'u — licensed providers (from 250 TOP/person), groups of max. 4 swimmers per whale. Season July-October, book early.

Sunday is absolutely sacred — almost everything is closed, swimming and loud activities in villages are not allowed. Respect and plan as a day of rest.

Flight to Vava'u — Real Tonga Airlines flies daily from Tongatapu (1 hour). Alternative: ferry (24 hours, adventurous). Vava'u is the highlight.

Modest clothing — Tonga is conservative. Cover shoulders and knees, especially in villages and churches. Swimwear only at the beach.

Bring cash — credit cards are only accepted in larger hotels and restaurants. ATMs on Tongatapu and Vava'u, not on Ha'apai.
