About Porto-Novo

Porto-Novo is the official capital of Benin and the center of Yoruba and Goun culture in West Africa. The city on Lake Nokoü preserves an Afro-Brazilian heritage: Returned former slaves from Brazil brought baroque architecture in the 19th century, which still characterizes the Grande Mosquee (once a Brazilian church) and several townhouses today. The Royal Palace of Porto-Novo (Musee Honme) was the seat of the Goun kings and showcases the history of the Kingdom of Dahomey. The Musee Ethnographique provides insight into Vodun culture (Voodoo has its roots in Benin, not Haiti). The Jardin des Plantes et de la Nature is a peaceful botanical garden. Porto-Novo is located on Lake Nokoü, where the stilt village of Ganvie stands — the Venice of Africa: 30,000 people live in houses on stilts above the water, a UNESCO Tentative List site. A canoe ride through Ganvie is one of the most impressive experiences in West Africa. Benin's Vodun culture is alive in Porto-Novo: Shrines, ceremonies, and the annual Vodun Day (January 10) make the city a spiritual center of a religion that has 60 million followers worldwide.
