About Banjul
Banjul is the capital of Gambia — the smallest country on the African mainland, a narrow strip of land along the Gambia River, completely surrounded by Senegal. The city is located on an island at the mouth of the river and is the gateway to a surprisingly diverse travel destination. The Albert Market in the city center is the vibrant heart of Banjul: fabrics, spices, masks, crafts, and the cries of vendors in a labyrinthine market that appeals to all the senses. The National Museum Gallery and Arch 22 (a triumphal arch with an observation platform) provide orientation and history. Kunta Kinteh Island (formerly James Island, UNESCO World Heritage) in the Gambia River was a central point of the transatlantic slave trade. The ruins of the fort tell the story of millions of abducted Africans — an emotional and important place. Alex Haley's novel Roots made the island world-famous. Gambia is one of the best birdwatching areas in Africa: over 560 bird species in a country as large as Schleswig-Holstein. The Abuko Nature Reserve, Tanji Bird Reserve, and boat tours on the Gambia River offer kingfishers, hornbills, and pelicans in large numbers. The beaches of the Senegambia region (Kololi, Kotu) offer sun and sea.
