About Bamako
Bamako is the capital of music in West Africa — a city of 4.2 million on the Niger River that has produced legends such as Ali Farka Touré, Salif Keita, Oumou Sangaré, and Amadou & Mariam, and whose music scene laid the foundation for the global Afrobeat boom. In Bamako, music pulses from every courtyard, bar, and taxi, and the Griot tradition — storytellers and musicians who have passed down the knowledge of the Mande peoples for generations — is still alive here. The city stretches on both sides of the Niger, connected by three bridges. The northern bank houses the business center with the Grand Marché, one of the liveliest markets in West Africa: stacks of colorful Bogolan fabrics (mud cloth), gold, spices, traditional medicine, and lively bargaining in Bambara, French, and a dozen other languages. The National Museum of Mali, set in a garden with traditional mud architecture, preserves Dogon masks, Bamana sculptures, and archaeological finds from Djenné and Timbuktu. Point G, a rocky outcrop above the city, offers the best panoramic view: the Niger winds through the plain, the bridges connect the banks, and at sunset, the sky transforms into a spectacle of gold and red, unmatched in West Africa. **Important Note:** The Foreign Office warns against traveling to Mali due to the unstable security situation. Bamako is relatively safe, but the political situation requires special caution and up-to-date information.
