About Ilha de Moçambique
Ilha de Moçambique is a tiny coral island off the northern coast of Mozambique, which was once so significant that it gave the entire country its name. This island, only three kilometers long, has been a central hub of trade routes between Africa, Arabia, and India for centuries and served as the first capital of Portuguese East Africa. Since 1991, the entire island has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The history of Ilha de Moçambique is palpable in every stone: The massive São Sebastião Fortress from the 16th century, the largest Portuguese fortress south of the equator, watches over the northern tip of the island. The Nossa Senhora do Baluarte Chapel, built in 1522, is considered the oldest European building in the southern hemisphere. Between these monuments lie crumbling colonial palaces, a whitewashed mosque, a Hindu temple, and a former hospital — testimonies of an era when people from four continents lived together on this small island. Stone Town in the north of the island houses the historical buildings, but the true soul of Ilha can be found in Macuti Town in the south: a dense neighborhood of traditional houses with Macuti palm roofs, where today's Mozambican island life pulsates. Here, children play in the squares, women cook over open fires, and Dhows are built on the beach — craft traditions that date back to the Arab traders of the 9th century. The turquoise waters surrounding the island offer excellent snorkeling at untouched coral reefs, and the neighboring islands of Goa and Sena, accessible only by boat, create a tropical paradise with their white sandy beaches, away from mass tourism. Ilha de Moçambique is a place of overwhelming historical depth and at the same time disarming simplicity — a living museum under the East African sky.
