About Port Harcourt

Port Harcourt is the capital of Rivers State in Nigeria's Niger Delta and one of the most important cities in West Africa. Founded by the British in 1912 as a port for coal export, the city is now the center of Nigeria's oil industry and is nicknamed Garden City due to its green boulevards and parks. The Niger Delta is one of the largest river delta systems in the world: A labyrinth of mangroves, rivers, and lagoons stretches to the Atlantic. Boat tours through the mangrove forests provide insights into the lives of local fishing communities and the unique ecology of the delta. The Port Harcourt Tourist Beach (also known as Pleasure Park) on the Bonny River is a popular recreational spot with a beach, restaurants, and cultural events. Isaac Boro Park and the Port Harcourt Zoo offer additional leisure opportunities in the city center. The cuisine of Port Harcourt is considered one of the best in Nigeria: Fresh fish and seafood from the Niger Delta, combined with typical West African spices and ingredients, create unique taste experiences. The Mile One Market is a huge market offering everything from fresh fish to traditional fabrics. The cultural heritage of the region is diverse: The Ogoni, Ikwerre, Ijaw, and other ethnic groups maintain rich traditions in dance, music, and masquerade. The Rivers State Arts and Culture Council promotes local artists and regularly hosts festivals.
