About Ganzhou

Ganzhou is the largest city in Jiangxi Province in southeastern China and the historical center of Hakka culture. The city, over 2,000 years old, is located at the confluence of the Zhang and Gong rivers, which form the Gan River — the namesake of the entire Jiangxi Province. The Hakka Tulou roundhouses in the vicinity of Ganzhou are among the most fascinating structures in China. These massive, circular earthen buildings from the 12th to 20th centuries housed entire clans of up to 800 people under one roof. The Tulou in the neighboring Longnan County are less touristy than the famous UNESCO Tulou in Fujian, but equally impressive. The old city wall of Ganzhou, the Song Dynasty wall, is one of the best-preserved ancient city walls in China and dates back to the 11th century. From the Bajing-Tai Tower on the wall, there is a panoramic view of the old town and the confluence of the two rivers. Ganzhou is the center of orange cultivation in China — the Navel oranges from the Xunwu region are among the best in the country. From November to January, endless orange groves stretch across the gentle hills of the region, and orange-picking tours are a popular experience. The Tongjin Old Town and the Jiang-Nan-Song-Cheng district provide a vivid impression of life during the Song Dynasty, with reconstructed street scenes, traditional crafts, and Hakka cuisine.
