About Jilin

Jilin (also Jilin City, to distinguish it from the province of the same name) is one of the oldest cities in northeastern China and is located on the picturesque Songhua River, surrounded by mountains and forests. The city is world-famous for a unique natural phenomenon: the rime trees (Wusong/Rime) along the Songhua River. In the depths of winter (-20 to -30 °C), when the warm steam from the Fengman Dam meets the icy cold air, thick layers of sparkling rime form on the trees along the river — a sight considered one of the four great natural wonders of China. Thousands of trees transform into white crystal sculptures that sparkle in the morning sun. The Songhua Lake (Songhua Hu) is one of the largest artificial lakes in China and offers boating, hiking, and fishing in the summer, and ice fishing and snowmobiling in the winter. The area around the lake is covered with dense mixed forest, and in autumn the foliage glows in spectacular colors. The Beishan Temple complex is a unique religious area: Buddhist, Taoist, Confucian, and even Islamic temples have peacefully coexisted here since the Qing Dynasty on a mountain ridge — a symbol of religious harmony. The Jilin meteorites in the city museum are the largest documented meteorite mass in the world: On March 8, 1976, over 100 stones rained down from the sky, the largest weighing 1,770 kilograms. A unique collection that attracts geologists from all over the world.
