About Jiujiang

Jiujiang is a historic port city on the southern shore of the Yangtze (Changjiang) in Jiangxi Province and the gateway to the UNESCO World Heritage Site Lushan. The city has over 2,200 years of history and has always been a strategic transportation hub at the intersection of the Yangtze and Poyang Lake — the largest freshwater lake in China. Lushan (Mount Lu) is one of the most famous mountain ranges in China and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1996. The mist-covered peaks (up to 1,474 m) have inspired poets, painters, and philosophers for millennia. Li Bai wrote his famous poem about the waterfall here, and Lushan served as a summer residence for emperors, missionaries, and later for Mao Zedong. Over 200 historical villas from the colonial era shape the mountain town of Guling. Poyang Lake is the largest freshwater reserve in China and an internationally significant bird sanctuary. In winter, hundreds of thousands of migratory birds rest here, including the extremely rare Siberian crane — over 95% of the world population winters at Poyang Lake. The Suojiang Pagoda (Suo Jiang Ta) from the Song Dynasty stands directly on the banks of the Yangtze and was once a lighthouse for navigation. The Xunyang Tower recalls the famous scene from the classic novel The Robbers of Liangshan Marsh, one of the four great works of Chinese literature.
