About Lueliang

Lueliang is a district city in the west of Shanxi Province, nestled between the Lüliang Mountains and the Yellow River. The region is one of the most pristine landscapes in northern China — dramatic gorges, terraced loess hills, and the mighty Yellow River shape the scenery. The Pangquangou Nature Reserve in the Lüliang Mountains is a national park with dense forests, alpine meadows, and a rich wildlife. Rare species such as the golden takin and the leopard inhabit this area. The hiking trails lead through untouched mountain landscapes with elevations over 2,500 meters and offer a spectacular display of colors in autumn. At the western edge of the district, the Yellow River forms a natural border with Shaanxi Province. Qikou Ancient Town, a former trading port on the Yellow River, largely preserves its architecture from the Qing Dynasty: stone alleys, old merchant houses, and temples tell of the flourishing trade era of the 18th century. Qikou is considered one of the best-preserved historical villages in Shanxi. The region is also known for its cave architecture (Yaodong): dwellings carved into the loess slopes, where people have lived for millennia. This sustainable construction method provides natural climate control — cool in summer, warm in winter. Visitors can stay in Yaodong guesthouses in some villages.
