About Tai'an

Tai'an is a city in Shandong Province, inextricably linked to Mount Tai (Taishan) — the holiest of the five sacred mountains of China and one of the most important mountains in Chinese civilization. For over 3,000 years, emperors, poets, and believers have been pilgrimaging to its 1,545-meter-high summit. The ascent to the summit via the 6,660 stone steps is a spiritual experience in itself: Along the way, there are countless stone inscriptions, temples, gates, and centuries-old pines. The famous Stairway to Heaven (Shiba Pan), the last 1,633 steepest steps to the summit, is the iconic image of Taishan. The sunrise from the Jade Emperor Peak (Yuhuangding) is legendary — Confucius is said to have remarked: He who stands on Taishan sees the world as small. 72 Chinese emperors have climbed Taishan to offer sacrifices to heaven and legitimize their rule. In 1987, UNESCO declared the mountain a World Heritage Site and a World Natural Heritage Site at the same time — one of the few mixed sites worldwide. The Dai Temple (Dai Miao) at the foot of the mountain in the old town of Tai'an is one of the largest and oldest temple complexes in China: Since the Han Dynasty (206 BC), emperors have worshipped here before their ascent. The main hall (Tiankuang Dian) is one of the three largest classical halls in China, comparable to the Forbidden City. Tai'an is reachable from Beijing by high-speed train in just 2 hours and is ideal for a day trip or weekend getaway.

5 travel tips for Tai'an

Insider knowledge that makes your holiday better.

China visa required — apply in advance. Tai'an is not a transit visa location, a regular tourist visa is needed.

Plan for sunrise — night ascent from around 2 AM or cable car plus overnight stay at the summit hotel. Warm clothing and flashlight essential.

Cable car as an alternative — those who do not wish to climb the 6,660 steps can take the cable car (Zhongtianmen to Nantianmen). Ascent takes about 4-6 hours on foot.

Use high-speed train — Tai'an Station is on the Beijing–Shanghai line. Beijing 2 h, Shanghai 3 h, Jinan 30 min.

Rent a thick jacket — at the summit, it can be up to 15 °C colder than in the city. Jackets can be rented at the top for a few Yuan.
