Wenzhou is located on the southeastern coast of Zhejiang Province and is legendary in China as the city of entrepreneurs. The Wenzhou merchants are considered the most business-savvy in China — their diaspora communities can be found in almost every major city in the world. However, Wenzhou offers much more than just business acumen: the dramatic landscape of the Yandang Mountains and a rich history make the city a surprising travel destination. The Yandang Mountains (Yandangshan), 70 km north of Wenzhou, are among the most spectacular mountain landscapes in southern China and are a UNESCO Global Geopark. Volcanic rock formations, waterfalls, and deep gorges create a landscape that has inspired poets and painters since the Tang Dynasty. The Dalongqiu Waterfalls plunge 190 meters into the depths. Wenzhou's old town (Wuma Street) preserves historic temples, artisan streets, and traditional shops. Jiangxin Island in the Ou River is a green park with two pagodas from the Tang Dynasty and the former British consulate from the treaty port era. Wenzhou's cuisine is famous far beyond the region: as part of Zhejiang cuisine, it is characterized by fresh seafood, light preparation, and surprising flavors. Especially the fish ball soup and the sea snails are local specialties. The Nanxi River landscape offers bamboo rafting through a picturesque scenery of bamboo forests, limestone cliffs, and historic villages — a tranquil alternative to the more touristy Li River in Guilin.
