About Zhongshan

Zhongshan is a city in the Pearl River Delta of Guangdong Province, named after Sun Yat-sen (Chinese: Sun Zhongshan) — the founding father of the Republic of China, who was born in 1866 in the village of Cuiheng near Zhongshan. The city is a pilgrimage site of modern Chinese history and a vibrant metropolis in the midst of China's most dynamic economic region. The Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall (Zhongshan Jinian Tang) and the birthplace in Cuiheng are national monuments: The birthplace, in a Western-influenced style, reflects Sun Yat-sen's connection to the outside world — he studied in Honolulu and Hong Kong and became the revolutionary who ended the 2,000-year imperial rule. The Zhan Gardens (Zhongshan Zhangyuan) combine Cantonese and Western garden architecture and reflect Zhongshan's cultural openness. The city has produced an unusually high number of overseas Chinese — many Chinatowns worldwide were co-founded by Zhongshan emigrants. The old town of Zhongshan (Sun Wen West Road) is a carefully restored street from the Republican era (1920s-1940s) with arcade houses in the Cantonese-Southeast Asian style: confectionery shops, tea houses, and photo studios convey the atmosphere of the early 20th century. Zhongshan is strategically located between Guangzhou, Macau, and Shenzhen. The Shenzhen-Zhongshan Bridge, opening in 2024 — a 24 km long bridge-tunnel combination over the Pearl River — now connects the city directly to Shenzhen and Hong Kong.
