About Karaj

Karaj is the fourth largest city in Iran and lies on the southern slope of the majestic Alborz Mountains, just 40 kilometers west of Tehran. With over 1.9 million inhabitants, Karaj has long outgrown the shadow of the capital and offers travelers an authentic insight into Iranian daily life away from the tourist trails. The city serves as an ideal gateway to the Alborz Mountains, whose snow-capped peaks shape the cityscape. The Karaj Dam (Amir Kabir Dam), built in the 1960s, has created a turquoise reservoir surrounded by dramatic rock walls — a popular recreational area for hikers, anglers, and nature lovers. The Chalus Road, one of the most spectacular mountain passes in Iran, leads from Karaj over the Alborz Mountains to the Caspian Sea and offers breathtaking views of gorges and mountain lakes. Lake Taleqan, northwest of Karaj, is another gem: Surrounded by green alpine meadows and mountain villages, the landscape resembles Switzerland more than the Middle East. In spring, wildflower carpets transform the high valleys into colorful natural spectacles. The Karaj Cave (Yakh-Morad Cave) in the foothills of the Alborz impresses with its stalactites and underground chambers. The historic bazaar of Karaj, significantly smaller than those in Isfahan or Tabriz, offers a straightforward shopping experience with fair prices and friendly merchants who genuinely welcome foreign visitors.

5 travel tips for Karaj

Insider knowledge that makes your holiday better.

Visa required — Germans can obtain a Visa on Arrival (30 days) at Tehran airport or apply in advance at the embassy.

Cash only — international credit cards do not work in Iran. Bring enough euros or USD and exchange them at currency exchange offices.

Avoid Chalus Road on weekends — Thursday/Friday (Iranian weekend) is crowded. Much quieter during the week.

Observe dress code — women must wear a headscarf and loose clothing. It is more relaxed in the mountains than in Tehran.

Use the metro to Tehran — line 5 connects Karaj directly with Tehran. Cheaper and faster than by car in traffic.
