About Faisalabad
Faisalabad is the third largest city in Pakistan and the industrial heart of the country. As the largest textile city in Pakistan, Faisalabad produces over 60% of the country's textile exports and is therefore referred to as the Manchester of Pakistan. The city, founded by the British in 1880 as Lyallpur and renamed in 1977 in honor of King Faisal of Saudi Arabia, combines colonial heritage with vibrant industrial life. The heart of the city is the Clock Tower (Ghanta Ghar), an octagonal clock tower in the center, from which eight bazaars radiate in all directions — inspired by the Union Jack flag, a unique urban planning concept from the British colonial era. The eight bazaars (Bhawana Bazaar, Chiniot Bazaar, Aminpur Bazaar, and others) form one of the largest contiguous market areas in Pakistan. The Faisalabad Museum of Agriculture documents the significance of the region as Pakistan's granary: the fertile Punjab produces the majority of the country's wheat, rice, and cotton harvest. The University of Agriculture Faisalabad is one of the oldest and most prestigious agricultural universities in South Asia. The Jinnah Garden (Company Bagh) is the green lung of the city: a spacious park with fountains, a zoo, and a botanical garden, established during the colonial period and still a popular meeting place for families. The Chenab Plain around Faisalabad is one of the most fertile regions on Earth — the extensive canal system, established by the British, irrigates millions of hectares of farmland and shapes the landscape.
