About Duschanbe
Duschanbe, the capital of Tajikistan, is located in a green valley surrounded by the foothills of the Pamir Mountains. The name means Monday — named after the Monday market that once shaped the village from which the Soviet planned city grew. The city itself is tranquil: wide plane tree boulevards, Soviet architecture, and the vast Rudaki Park with its fountains form the center. The Flagpole Promenade with the once world's tallest flagpole (165 m, now surpassed) and the golden Ismoil Somoni statue (Tajikistan's national hero) are the landmarks. The National Museum is surprisingly good: a huge reclining Buddha statue from the 6th century and wall paintings from the ancient Silk Road city of Panjakent. The Green Bazaar (Bozori Mehrgon) offers Central Asian splendor: mountains of nuts, dried fruits, spices, and the famous Tajik flatbread (Non). Duschanbe's true significance is as a gateway to the Pamir Highway — one of the most spectacular highways in the world through the roof of the world (4,000+ m). The Fann Mountains with their turquoise mountain lakes are only 3 hours away and offer world-class trekking.
