About Yerevan

Yerevan is the capital of Armenia and one of the oldest cities in the world — founded in 782 BC, 29 years before Rome. The "Pink City" (named after the pink tuff stone from which many buildings are made) lies in a basin at an altitude of 900-1,300 meters, and on clear days, the snow-capped Ararat (5,137 m) — Armenia's holy mountain, ironically located in Turkey — dominates the entire southern skyline. The Cascade, a monumental staircase monument from the Soviet era, connects the lower city with the upper city via 572 steps, flanked by sculptures and galleries — including the Cafesjian Center for the Arts with an impressive collection of contemporary art. From the top, the most famous view of Yerevan opens up: the city, with the Ararat plain and the white peak behind it. The Genocide Memorial Tsitsernakaberd commemorates the genocide of Armenians in 1915 — a moving memorial with an eternal flame, which is central to Armenian identity. The Matenadaran (Institute of Ancient Manuscripts) preserves over 17,000 medieval manuscripts — one of the most significant collections in the world. In recent years, Yerevan has experienced a cafe and gastro revolution: craft beer bars, wine bars (Armenia is one of the oldest wine countries in the world), and restaurants that modernly interpret traditional Armenian cuisine. The city is surprisingly cosmopolitan, affordable, and safe.
