About Mostar
Mostar is a city that embodies history, tragedy, and rebirth like few others. The famous Stari Most — the 'Old Bridge' — spans the emerald-green Neretva River and is Bosnia's landmark, a UNESCO World Heritage site, and a symbol of reconciliation after the Bosnian War. Built by the Ottomans in 1566, the bridge was destroyed in the war in 1993 and was faithfully rebuilt in 2004. Today, it stands gleaming white over the turquoise river, and local bridge divers continue the centuries-old tradition of diving from the 21-meter-high bridge — a spectacle that attracts spectators from around the world. The old town on both sides of the bridge is an Ottoman jewel: cobblestone streets, historic mosques, Turkish baths (hammams), and the old bazaar with coppersmiths, jewelers, and carpet merchants. The Kujundžiluk bazaar leads directly to the bridge and offers handmade souvenirs, while the scent of Turkish coffee and Ćevapi wafts through the streets. The Koski Mehmed Pasha Mosque by the riverside has a minaret that can be climbed for spectacular views of the bridge and the city. The Karadžozbeg Mosque, the largest in Herzegovina, impresses with its dome and calligraphy. Both mosques are open to visitors and highlight the Ottoman heritage of the region. Mostar still bears the scars of war: bullet holes in facades, ruins next to restored buildings, and the War Photo Exhibition Museum tell a painful story. At the same time, the city pulses with joy — the cafes by the riverside are full, the people are open and hospitable, and the mix of Ottoman, Austro-Hungarian, and modern architecture makes Mostar one of the most fascinating travel destinations in Europe.
