About Nida

Nida is the enchanting main town of the Curonian Spit – a narrow peninsula between the Baltic Sea and the Curonian Lagoon, which is a UNESCO World Heritage site and home to one of the most extraordinary landscapes in Europe. The small fishing village on the Lithuanian side of the spit captivates with its brightly painted wooden houses, massive moving dunes, endless pine forests, and a tranquility that so enchanted Nobel Prize winner Thomas Mann that he built his summer house here – now a museum and pilgrimage site for literature lovers from around the world. The Great Dune of Nida (Parnidis Dune) rises over 50 meters high at the southern edge of the town and offers a breathtaking panoramic view: on one side the roaring Baltic Sea, on the other the mirror-smooth Curonian Lagoon, in between the narrow spit with its pine forests and the white glowing sand mountains. The dune landscape resembles the Sahara and was feared by locals for centuries as a sand desert – entire villages were buried under the moving sand. It was only the reforestation in the 19th century that partially tamed the dunes. Nida itself is a place of deceleration: no mass tourism, no hotel castles, no hustle and bustle. The main street is lined with fish smokehouses, small galleries, amber workshops, and cafés where one can sit for hours over coffee and Lithuanian cake. The traditional Kuronian pennants – colorful weather vanes on the wooden houses that once indicated the fishermen's belonging to their village – give the place a distinctive appearance. For German travelers, Nida has a special emotional significance: the Curonian Spit was part of East Prussia until 1945, and the Thomas Mann connection creates a cultural bridge. The best way to arrive is by ferry from Klaipėda (Memel) across the lagoon – a short crossing that marks the entry into another world. The spit is car-free, and the bicycle is the preferred means of transport. The region is suitable for a quiet summer holiday away from the mainstream, combinable with Klaipėda and the Baltic capitals.
