About Port-au-Prince

Port-au-Prince is the capital of Haiti — the first black republic in the world, which fought for its independence in 1804 through a successful slave uprising against Napoleon, making history. The 1.2 million city in a bay on the Gulf of Gonâve is a place of extreme contrasts: poverty and art, chaos and creativity, destruction (the 2010 earthquake devastated the city) and unwavering will to live. The Citadelle Laferrière (UNESCO), 130 km north, is the largest fortress in the Caribbean — a monument to the anti-slavery struggle on a 900-meter-high mountain. In Port-au-Prince itself, the Musée du Panthéon National Haïtien (MUPANAH) is the most important cultural site: history of the revolution, voodoo artifacts, and the anchors of the Santa Maria, Columbus's ship that sank off Haiti. Haiti's art scene is world-famous: the naive, colorful paintings of Haitian painters — vibrant, spiritual, full of voodoo symbolism — hang in the most significant museums around the world. The Iron Market (Marché en Fer), an iron market hall, is the place where art, craft, and everyday life meet. **Important Note:** Port-au-Prince has been in a severe security crisis since 2024 due to gang conflicts. The Foreign Office warns against travel. The aspects described document the cultural heritage.
