About Roatán
Roatán, the largest of the Honduran Bay Islands, is a world-class diving and snorkeling paradise. The island is located in the Caribbean Sea, just 65 kilometers off the north coast of Honduras, and is part of the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef — the second-largest coral reef in the world after the Great Barrier Reef. Here, Caribbean island paradise meets an underwater wonderland that captivates divers from around the globe. The reef often begins just a few meters from the beach, and even snorkelers can experience spectacular coral formations, sea turtles, rays, and schools of tropical fish. For certified divers, Roatán offers world-class dive sites such as Mary's Place (a dramatic rock fissure), the Odyssey Wreck, and the famous wall dive at West End Wall, where the reef drops into deep blue abysses. West Bay Beach, regularly voted among the most beautiful beaches in the Caribbean, features a wide stretch of dazzling white sand lined with coconut palms and turquoise water. Unlike many Caribbean hotspots, the beach is still relatively affordable and not overdeveloped with mega-resorts. The sleepy fishing village of West End is the tourist heart of the island, but in the best sense: no high-rises, no chains, instead colorful wooden huts, dive shops, restaurants with beach terraces, and a reggae atmosphere that immediately slows you down. In the evenings, you sit with your feet in the sand, drink a Salva Vida beer, and listen to the waves. Roatán also has a fascinating culture. The Garifuna, descendants of African and Caribbean indigenous peoples, live in villages like Punta Gorda and preserve their unique music, dances, and cuisine. A visit to a Garifuna community offers a deep insight into one of the most fascinating cultures of the Caribbean. For animal lovers, the island offers encounters with monkeys at Gumbalimba Park, sloths at Daniel Johnson's Monkey & Sloth Hangout, and dolphins in the lagoon at Anthony's Key Resort. The mangroves on the southern coast can be explored by kayak and are home to a rich underwater fauna.
