Saving Tips

Albania is already inexpensive — but with a few tricks, you can save even more:

  • Eat Byrek: Albania's most popular snack: puff pastry filled with spinach, cheese, or meat. Available on every street corner for 50–100 Lek (0.50–1€). The cheapest and tastiest meal in the country.
  • Furgons instead of taxis: The minibuses (Furgons) are Albania's affordable transport system. They leave when full (not on schedule), but they cost a fraction of a taxi. Tirana–Shkodra: 3–4€, Tirana–Berat: 4–5€.
  • Book in advance in summer: The Riviera in August gets crowded — accommodations in Ksamil and Saranda can double in price. Book weeks in advance or opt for Himara and Dhermi.
  • Refill water: Tap water is not drinkable everywhere, but large 5-liter canisters in supermarkets cost only 0.50–1€. Saves compared to small bottles.
  • Use Lek instead of Euro: Always pay in Lek — the euro rate in restaurants and hotels is almost always worse than the real exchange rate. ATMs dispense Lek directly.
  • Bargaining allowed: On markets and in private accommodations, polite negotiation is common and expected. For taxi rides: agree on the price beforehand or insist on the meter.
  • Free beaches: All beaches in Albania are public and freely accessible. Sunbeds and umbrellas cost 3–5€ per day, but you can always bring your own towel.
  • Seasonal prices: The price differences between high and low season are enormous. May/June and September/October: up to 50% cheaper than July/August.
