Rila Mountains & Rila Monastery
The Rila Mountains are Bulgaria's highest and most imposing mountain range — and with the summit Musala (2,925 m), it hosts the highest point of the entire Balkan Peninsula. Spanning an area of 2,629 km², it is an alpine paradise of glacial lakes, rocky peaks, coniferous forests, and high pastures, overshadowing some Alpine regions in its wildness and beauty.
Rila Monastery (UNESCO)
The Monastery of Saint Ivan of Rila is Bulgaria's most significant cultural monument and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1983. Founded in the 10th century by the hermit Ivan Rilski, it lies nestled in dense forests at an altitude of 1,147 meters — a place of overwhelming beauty and spiritual power.
The current complex mostly dates from the 19th century (rebuilt after a fire in 1833) and is a masterpiece of the Bulgarian Revival: Five-story arcaded galleries with black-and-white striped walls enclose a courtyard with the main church. The frescoes on the church's exterior walls are a total work of art — colorful depictions of heaven, hell, saints, and sinners, executed with a level of detail that captivates for hours.
Inside: the iconostasis — a ten-meter-high, completely gold-covered icon wall with over 30 icons. In the treasury: the famous Rafail's Cross, an 81 cm high wooden cross with over 1,500 tiny figures, carved by a monk who went blind in the process.
- Admission: Free (courtyard and church). Museum: 8 BGN (4€).
- Accommodation: Simple pilgrim rooms are available in the monastery itself (from 20 BGN/10€) — an unforgettable experience to stand in the empty monastery early in the morning.
- Getting there: By car 120 km from Sofia (1.5h), by bus from Sofia (once daily, 3h, 11€), or by organized tour (from 30€ including transfer).
The Seven Rila Lakes
The Seven Lakes (Sedemte Rilski Ezera) are seven glacial lakes at altitudes between 2,095 and 2,535 meters, nestled in a barren, moon-like high mountain landscape. They bear poetic names: The Eye (Okoto), the Kidney (Bŭbrekŭ), the Heart (Sŭrtseto), the Twin (Bliznaka), the Trefoil (Trilistnika), the Fish Lake (Ribnoto), and the Tear (Sŭlzata).
The hike to all seven lakes takes about 4–6 hours (round trip). The starting point is the chairlift from the Pionerska Hut (1,537 m) to 2,100 m — from there, it's an uphill walk. The hike is moderately difficult and doable for fit occasional hikers. Best time: July–September. Surefootedness is required, sturdy footwear is a must.
💡 Tipp
The Seven Lakes are extremely popular on weekends in July/August — visit during the week or in September. For those wishing to stay overnight: The mountain hut Sedemte Ezera (7 Lakes Hut) at 2,196 m is a rustic but legendary mountain accommodation (from 25 BGN/13€ with half board). Early in the morning, when the clouds lie beneath you, the atmosphere is magical.
