Plovdiv — The Second Capital

Plovdiv (Пловдив) is Bulgaria's secret cultural capital — and by some counts, the oldest continuously inhabited city in Europe (since around 6000 BC, about 8,000 years). The city on the Maritza River was the European Capital of Culture in 2019 and combines ancient history with a vibrant, young creative scene.

Old Town on the Hills

Plovdiv's Old Town (Stariat Grad) lies on three of the original seven hills and is an architectural jewel: magnificent Revival houses from the 18th–19th centuries with their typical bay windows, colorful facades, and carved wooden ceilings. Many are now museums: the Ethnographic Museum in the Kuyumdzhiev House and the Hindliyan House Gallery are among the most beautiful.

Roman Amphitheater

The Ancient Theater of Philippopolis (2nd century AD) is one of the best-preserved Roman theaters in the world — and it is still used today for concerts and theater performances. The tribune seats 7,000 spectators and offers a breathtaking view over the Thracian plain to the Rhodopes. Admission: 5 BGN (2.50€).

Kapana — The Creative District

The former crafts district Kapana (The Trap) — so named because of its winding streets where one can "get caught" — is Plovdiv's creative heart: galleries, studios, craft beer bars, vintage shops, and colorful street art on every corner. On weekends, street markets and live music take place here. A district that perfectly captures the spirit of Plovdiv.

Practical

Plovdiv is accessible from Sofia by bus in 2 hours (every 30 minutes, from 7€). A day trip is possible, but an overnight stay is worthwhile to experience the old town at night and the nightlife. Hotels from 20€/night.

💡 Tipp

Plovdiv's old town is most beautiful in the evening: the houses are illuminated, the streets empty, and the Roman theater shines in the floodlights. A dinner at the "Pavaj" restaurant with a view of the illuminated old town is one of Bulgaria's most romantic dining experiences.
