Vitosha Mountains
Sofia's greatest asset is the nature on its doorstep: The Vitosha Mountains begin at the southern edge of the city and reach alpine heights at the summit of Cherni Vrach (2,290 m). The Vitosha Nature Park — one of the oldest nature parks in the world (founded in 1934) — is Sofia's green lung and adventure playground.
Hiking
From the end station of the bus or gondola (lift up to 1,800 m), you can reach the summit in 1.5–3 hours. The hike over the Stone River (Zlatnite Mostove / Golden Bridges) — a vast field of granite blocks through which a stream flows — is Sofia's most popular hiking trail and is also suitable for families. In summer: cool mountain air as a contrast to the city heat. In winter: skiing and sledding.
Boyana Church (UNESCO)
At the foot of Vitosha lies the Boyana Church, an unassuming small church that packs a punch: The frescoes from 1259 are considered precursors of the Italian Renaissance — over 100 years before Giotto, the painters depicted lifelike portraits with individual facial features and natural proportions. UNESCO World Heritage since 1979. Admission: 10 BGN (5€), only 15 visitors at a time — book online in advance!

💡 Tipp
The fastest way to Vitosha: Bus 66 or 93 to Dragalevtsi, then take the gondola (lift) up. In 45 minutes, you can go from the city center to the mountain world. In winter, Vitosha is the cheapest city-close ski area in Europe — ski pass from 40 BGN (20€).
