Tipping
Tipping (Propina) is important in the Dominican Republic — for many service workers, it is a significant part of their income.
Guidelines
| Situation | Tip |
|---|---|
| Restaurant (outside AI) | 10–15% (often "Propina Legal" of 10% is already included — check the bill!) |
| All-Inclusive Waiter/Bartender | 1–2 USD per service |
| All-Inclusive Housekeeping | 2–5 USD/day (leave on the pillow) |
| Taxi Driver | Not customary (price negotiated beforehand) |
| Tour Guide (day trip) | 5–10 USD per person |
| Boat Guide/Driver | 3–5 USD |
| Porter (hotel/airport) | 1–2 USD per piece of luggage |
| Hairdresser/Barbershop | 10–20% of the price |
Propina Legal
In restaurants, a "Propina Legal" of 10% and an ITBIS (value-added tax) of 18% are automatically added to the bill. This is stated on the bill. The 10% Propina does not always go to the waiters — it is customary to give an extra 5–10% in cash if the service was good.
