Beaches

★★★ Bavaro Beach

The main beach of Punta Cana and one of the most famous beaches in the Caribbean: fine white coral sand, turquoise blue water, coconut palms to the horizon. The offshore coral reef breaks the waves and makes the water calm enough for children. Public access is possible via El Cortecito — here beach restaurants and bars line up.

The resorts occupy sections with loungers and umbrellas, but all beaches in the Dominican Republic are legally publicly accessible.

Cap Cana & Juanillo Beach

★★★ Playa Juanillo

The more luxurious alternative to Bavaro: A pristine crescent of white sand, framed by the exclusive Cap Cana development. Less crowded than Bavaro, but with luxury resorts (Hyatt Zilara, Secrets). Public access is limited, but possible through local restaurants on the beach.

Cap Cana itself is a gated community with a marina, golf courses (Jack Nicklaus design), and the spectacular Scape Park — an adventure theme park with ziplines, caves, and the famous Hoyo Azul.

Playa Macao

★★ Playa Macao

The wildest beach in the region: golden sand, strong waves (surfer spot!), no resorts in sight. Located 20 minutes north of Bavaro. Dominican families come here on weekends — the counter-program to the resort bubble. Beach restaurants serve fresh fish and plantains. Caution: The current can be strong!
