Climate & Best Travel Time

Nepal's Climate Zones — From Tropical to Arctic

Nepal spans 5 climate zones over a horizontal distance of only 150 km — from the tropical lowlands (60 m) to the arctic death zone (8,849 m). This means: There is no uniform “Nepal weather", but extremely different conditions depending on altitude and season.

The Climate Zones in Detail

  • Tropical Zone (60–1,000 m / Terai): Hot and humid. Summer (May–Sep): 30–40°C, muggy, heavy monsoon rains. Winter (Nov–Feb): pleasant 15–25°C, little rain. Best travel time for Chitwan and Bardia: October–March. In summer unbearably hot and full of mosquitoes
  • Subtropical Zone (1,000–2,000 m / Kathmandu, Pokhara): Pleasant climate with mild winters and warm summers. Kathmandu (1,350 m): Summer 25–30°C, winter 2–18°C. At night, it can drop to 0°C in winter — most hotels do not have heating! Warm clothing is a must from December to February. During the monsoon (June–September): daily heavy rains, 60–80% of annual precipitation falls in these 4 months
  • Temperate Zone (2,000–3,000 m / Trekking Start Points): Cool summers, cold winters. Daytime on the trek pleasant 15–20°C (peak season), nights 0–5°C. Rhododendrons bloom spectacularly in March/April
  • Alpine Zone (3,000–5,000 m / Trekking High Camps): Harsh and cold. Day temperatures 5–15°C, nights -5 to -15°C. Snow possible from November. The thinner air amplifies UV radiation — sunburn at 4,000 m is a real risk, even on cloudy days
  • Arctic/Nival Zone (above 5,000 m): Permafrost, extreme winds, inhospitable. Only for mountaineers with expedition equipment. Temperatures down to -40°C at the Everest summit

The Monsoon — Nepal's Lifeline and Travel Obstacle

The Southwest Monsoon (mid-June to mid-September) brings over 80% of the total annual rainfall and is Nepal's climate-defining event. For the country, it is absolutely vital — without the monsoon, agriculture would collapse, rivers would dry up, and hydropower plants would stand still. The rice fields of the Terai and the terraced slopes of the midlands are entirely dependent on monsoon rain. For travelers, however, it means: Landslides block roads, trekking paths turn into mud streams, flights are canceled (poor visibility), and leeches are omnipresent on every forest trek. Nevertheless, the monsoon has its charm: The landscape explodes in lush green, the rice terraces are flooded (photogenic!), waterfalls thunder, and tourists are scarce.

The Best Travel Time — Month by Month

PeriodConditionsRecommendation
October–November★★★ THE perfect travel time. Clear views after the monsoon, pleasant temperatures, dry paths, Dashain and Tihar festivalsTrekking, culture, wildlife — all ideal. But: Peak season = higher prices, full tea houses, book permits early!
December–February★★ Cold, especially at night (even in Kathmandu). Clear mountain views. High passes often closed from December (Thorong La, Cho La). Fewer tourists, lower pricesLow treks (Poon Hill, Ghorepani), Chitwan/Bardia (perfect safari season), culture in Kathmandu/Patan/Bhaktapur
March–May★★ Spring with rhododendron bloom (March/April = spectacular!). Increasingly warm and hazy. May becomes hot and dusty in Kathmandu. Everest expedition seasonTrekking good until April (rhododendrons!). Wildlife in the Terai until March. From May: only high mountain treks
June–September★ Monsoon. Heavy rains, landslides, poor visibility, leeches, flight cancellations. Most treks not recommendedUpper Mustang & Dolpo (rain shadow!), Rara Lake. Lowest prices, few tourists. For those who don't mind rain: Kathmandu culture and rafting (rivers are high = more action!)

💡 Tipp

The absolute sweet spot for Nepal is the second half of October: The monsoon has just ended, the air is crystal clear, the temperatures are perfect for trekking, and with a bit of luck, you can experience the last days of Dashain or the beginning of Tihar. Second choice: Late March/early April — rhododendrons in full bloom turn the treks into a spectacle of colors, and the temperatures are pleasantly spring-like.
