About Praia

Praia, the capital of Cape Verde, is located on the largest island of Santiago and is the vibrant heart of the archipelago in the Atlantic. The city on a plateau above the sea combines African, Portuguese, and Brazilian influences into a unique Creole culture — nowhere in the world does a place sound, taste, and feel quite like here. The historic center Plateau (Plato) sits on a cliff above the harbor with colonial buildings, the Praca Alexandre Albuquerque, and the Ethnographic Museum. The Mercado de Sucupira is Praia's liveliest market: fabrics, spices, music CDs, and fresh fish in a chaotic, colorful hustle. Praia's beaches like Quebra Canela and Prainha are right in the city. The surroundings of Santiago offer spectacular landscapes: the Serra Malagüta mountain range, the valley of Ribeira Grande (Cidade Velha, UNESCO World Heritage Site — the first European settlement in the tropics), and the Grogü distilleries (Cape Verdean sugarcane liquor). Music is omnipresent: Morna (melancholic ballads, known through Cesaria Evora), Funana (energetic dance music), and Coladeira fill the bars and clubs in the evenings. Cape Verde is the most musical nation in Africa.
