About Kananga

Kananga is the capital of the Kasai-Central province in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and a center of Luba culture, one of the most significant civilizations in Central Africa. The city was founded during the Belgian colonial period as Luluabourg and was known by this name until 1966. The region is historically closely linked to diamond mining — the Kasai area is one of the richest diamond regions in the world. Artisanal mining shapes the economic and social life of the city: thousands of small-scale miners search the riverbanks for gemstones, while the official trade runs through the Comptoirs (trading offices) in the city center. The Luba culture is particularly vibrant in Kananga. The Luba Kingdom (14th-19th century) was one of the most powerful pre-colonial empires in Africa, famous for its wood carving art, lukasa memory boards, and complex political structures. In the surrounding area, visitors can visit traditional villages where artisans craft masks, statues, and textiles using ancient traditions. The Notre-Dame de Kananga Cathedral is a spiritual center of the city with lively services where African rhythms and Christian liturgy merge. The markets of Kananga offer a colorful insight into everyday life: tropical fruits, bushmeat, cassava, and handwoven fabrics are sold outdoors.
