About Lilongwe

Lilongwe is the capital of Malawi — the 'warm heart of Africa', as the small country in southeastern Africa is affectionately called, and this nickname holds true: Malawians are considered the friendliest people on the continent, and Lilongwe exudes a relaxed warmth that visitors can feel immediately. The city of 1.1 million is situated on a plateau at an altitude of 1,050 meters and is divided into two parts: the Old Town with the lively Lilongwe Market, street kitchens, and authentic daily life, and the Capital City — the planned government district with wide boulevards, the parliament, and embassies. The Lilongwe Wildlife Centre is a unique project: a rescue center for wildlife (crocodiles, hyenas, monkeys, birds of prey) that also serves as a conservation education center and fills a surprisingly good half-day. The Kumbali Cultural Village offers an interactive introduction to the traditional life of the Chewa ethnic group — dancing, cooking, storytelling. However, the true reason to visit Malawi lies 3-5 hours by car away: Lake Malawi (UNESCO), the third-largest lake in Africa, stretches over 580 km and offers crystal-clear water, tropical fish, sandy beaches, and one of the most relaxed atmospheres on the continent — often referred to as the 'Lake of Stars'.
