About Saint-Denis

Saint-Denis is the capital of La Réunion, a French overseas department in the Indian Ocean — and thus the southernmost city of the European Union. The city on the northern coast offers French flair with Creole charm: bakeries next to Creole wooden houses, croissants next to samosas. The Creole old town (Rue de Paris) preserves colorful villas in Creole-Victorian style with tropical gardens. The Barachois, a tree-lined promenade with boules courts (Pétanque places), is the social meeting point of Saint-Denis. La Réunion is volcanic and spectacular: The Piton de la Fournaise (2,632 m, one of the most active volcanoes in the world), the three cirques (Cirques) Cilaos, Mafate, and Salazie (all UNESCO World Heritage Sites), and trekking along the GR R2 make the island one of the best hiking destinations in the world. Saint-Denis is the starting point: In 30 minutes you can reach the Cirque de Mafate (accessible only on foot or by helicopter), in 1.5 hours you can reach the volcano, and the lagoon of Saint-Gilles offers snorkeling and beaches.
