About Kigali

Kigali, the capital of Rwanda, is perhaps the most surprising city in Africa. Those arriving with images from 1994 in mind will find a modern, clean, and dynamic metropolis often referred to as the 'Singapore of Africa.' The city on a thousand hills has undergone a remarkable transformation and is now considered one of the safest, cleanest, and most innovative cities on the continent. The Kigali Genocide Memorial is the most important and moving place in the city. Here lie the remains of over 250,000 victims of the 1994 genocide, and the exhibition documents the events, their background, and aftermath with shocking clarity. A visit is emotionally demanding but essential to understand Rwanda's current society. However, Kigali consciously defines itself not only by its tragic past. The city has developed a thriving art scene. The Inema Arts Center, a dynamic gallery and studio community, showcases contemporary Rwandan art of impressive power. The Kigali Arts District and numerous street art projects transform neighborhoods into vibrant open-air galleries. The café culture reflects Rwanda's status as a producer of top-quality coffee. Specialty coffee shops like Question Coffee (run by genocide survivors) and Bourbon Coffee serve world-class single-origin coffee — directly from the hills where it grows. A coffee tour to the plantations around Kigali is a highlight for connoisseurs. Kigali's strategic location makes it the perfect starting point for Rwanda's world-famous gorilla trekking experiences in Volcanoes National Park. Encountering a mountain gorilla family in their natural habitat — just a few hours' drive from the capital — is one of the most moving wildlife encounters on our planet. The city also surprises with its culinary offerings. A new generation of Rwandan chefs combines traditional ingredients with international techniques. Restaurants like Heaven (with views over the city), Repub Lounge, and Fuschia Lane serve creative African cuisine at a world-class level — and at prices that leave European foodies astonished.
