About São Tomé

São Tomé, the main island of the small island nation of São Tomé and Príncipe in the Gulf of Guinea, is one of the least visited tropical paradises in the world. Located directly on the equator, the volcanic island offers a landscape of overwhelming jungle beauty: lush rainforests, waterfalls, volcanic peaks, and nearly deserted beaches. The former largest cocoa-producing region in the world has left a legacy that still shapes the island today. Decaying Portuguese Roças (plantation mansions) stand amidst the jungle like sets from a forgotten film. Some have been converted into charming eco-lodges — staying on a former cocoa plantation, surrounded by tropical nature and the sound of parrots, is a unique experience. Pico de São Tomé (2,024 m), the highest point on the island, rises from the dense rainforest and offers adventurous hikers a multi-day jungle trekking challenge. Pico Cão Grande, a 370-meter-high volcanic needle that juts out like a finger from the jungle, is one of West Africa's most iconic natural wonders. The beaches of São Tomé are among the most beautiful and secluded in the world. Praia Rei, Praia Jalé, and Praia Piscina offer golden sand, crystal-clear water, and total seclusion. From October to March, sea turtles lay their eggs on the beaches — conservation programs allow visitors to witness the egg-laying process. The island's cuisine is a creole fusion of Portuguese, African, and Brazilian influences. Fresh fish, plantains, breadfruit, and of course, chocolate — the island produces some of the finest single-origin cocoa in the world, and chocolate tastings on the plantations are a culinary highlight. São Tomé is the perfect destination for those seeking an escape from mass tourism. The infrastructure is simple, the paths sometimes adventurous, but the reward is an authenticity that has long been lost in most tropical paradises.
