About Freetown

Freetown, the capital of Sierra Leone, is spectacularly located on the hilly peninsula between the Sierra Leone River and the Atlantic Ocean. The name 'Free Town' tells the story of its founding: in 1792, freed slaves from Nova Scotia settled here and established one of the most diverse societies in West Africa. The Cotton Tree in the city center is the iconic landmark: a over 500-year-old kapok tree under which the first freed slaves said a prayer of thanks. The old town with its krio-Victorian wooden houses (Board Houses) — a unique fusion of West African and Victorian architecture — is a threatened heritage. Freetown's beaches are among the most beautiful in West Africa: Lumley Beach, River No. 2, Tokeh Beach, and Bureh Beach offer white sand, turquoise water, and palm trees — without the crowds of Caribbean beaches. The culture of Freetown is influenced by Krio: a creole language, Krio, is spoken by 97% of the population as a lingua franca. The music scene is vibrant, and the bars at Lumley Beach come alive on weekends.
