What makes Mogadishu special as a destination?

Mogadishu is one of the oldest cities in East Africa — founded in the 1st millennium as a trading port on the Indian Ocean, it was for centuries a hub of trade between Africa, Arabia, India, and China. Arab geographers of the Middle Ages described the city as wealthy and cosmopolitan, and Ibn Battuta praised its riches in the 14th century. Yet behind the headlines exists a city that is slowly rebuilding.
