About Khartum

Khartoum is located at the confluence of the Blue and White Nile — the place where the two most powerful rivers in Africa unite and become the Nile, which flows through Egypt into the Mediterranean Sea. This confluence (Al-Mogran) is Khartoum's geographical sensation: You can see how the bluish water of the Blue Nile and the greenish water of the White Nile slowly mix — a natural spectacle that defines the identity of the 2-million-inhabitant city. Khartoum was once the center of a powerful empire: The Kingdom of Kush and the Nubians ruled here centuries before the Egyptians, and the Pyramids of Meroë (UNESCO), 200 kilometers northeast, are older and more numerous than those of Giza — yet almost unknown. Khartoum is the gateway to this forgotten World Heritage. The National Museum of Sudan preserves the history of these civilizations: Nubian temples, Christian frescoes from the medieval Nubian era, and the reconstructed temple of Buhen — an entire temple that was saved before the Aswan Dam was built. The Suq al-Arabi (Arab Market) in Omdurman, the sister city on the west bank of the Nile, is one of the largest markets in Africa: spices, gold, camels, and incense. **Important Note:** Sudan has been in armed conflict since April 2023. The Foreign Office strongly advises against travel. The described sights document the cultural heritage.
