About Manama

Manama, the capital of Bahrain, is a fascinating mix of millennia-old history and modern Gulf state architecture. The small island nation in the Persian Gulf was once the center of pearl diving — the Pearl Route (UNESCO World Heritage) tells this story from the oyster beds to the merchant houses in Muharraq. The Bahrain Fort (Qal'at al-Bahrain, UNESCO) is a 4,000-year-old fortress of the Dilmun civilization, which served as a trading post between Mesopotamia and the Indus Valley. The National Museum next door is among the best in the Gulf region. The Bahrain World Trade Center with its integrated wind turbines and the Bahrain Financial Harbour shape the modern skyline. The Manama Souq is a labyrinthine maze of narrow alleys filled with spices, fabrics, gold, and perfume — more authentic than most markets in the Gulf states. The Bahrain International Circuit brings Formula 1 to the island every spring, and the first night race in history took place here. Bahrain is more liberal than its neighbors: restaurants, bars, and a vibrant culinary scene make Manama a nightlife destination for the entire Gulf region. The King Fahd Causeway connects the island with Saudi Arabia.
