About Baotou

Baotou is the largest city in Inner Mongolia and is often referred to as the gateway to the Mongolian steppe. The city is located on the Yellow River (Huang He) and combines industrial modernity with the ancient nomadic culture of the Mongols. Baotou is globally known as the capital of rare earths — about 60% of the world's reserves of these strategically important raw materials are located in the nearby Bayan-Obo mine. The Genghis Khan Mausoleum is located about 180 km south of Baotou in the Ordos steppe and is one of the most significant memorials in Mongolia. The palace complex honors the founder of the largest contiguous land empire in history with magnificent halls, murals, and ceremonial artifacts. The Xilamuren grasslands north of the city offer authentic insights into the life of Mongolian nomads: yurt accommodations, horseback riding, traditional wrestling, and the Naadam Festival in summer with archery, wrestling, and horse racing. The Wudangzhao Temple, also known as Guangjü Si, is the largest Tibetan Buddhist monastery in Inner Mongolia — an impressive complex from the 18th century with over 2,500 rooms. The Nanhai Wetland Park on the Yellow River is a surprising natural paradise on the edge of the desert: birdwatching, boat trips, and green oases amidst the dry landscape of Inner Mongolia.
