About Fushun

Fushun is located 45 kilometers east of Shenyang in Liaoning Province and combines a fascinating industrial heritage with the cradle of Manchu civilization. The city is home to the largest open-pit mine in the world and the birthplace of the dynasty that ruled China for over 260 years. The Fushun Open Pit Mine (West Open Pit Mine) is a monument of industrial history: with a depth of over 400 meters and a length of 6.6 kilometers, it is one of the largest man-made excavations on Earth. Coal has been mined here since 1901 — first by the Japanese, then by the People's Republic. A viewpoint at the edge offers a breathtaking view into the depths, where heavy machinery is still at work. The Yongling Tomb in Xinbin, 100 kilometers to the east, is a UNESCO World Heritage site and the oldest of the three imperial Manchu tombs. Here lie the ancestors of the founders of the Qing Dynasty, nestled in a picturesque mountain landscape. The complex, with its red walls, golden roofs, and stone guardian figures, is significantly less visited than the tombs in Beijing or Shenyang. The Hetu-Ala Castle, also in Xinbin, was the first capital of the Manchu under Nurhaci, the founder of the Later Jin Dynasty. The reconstructed fortress shows the life of the early Manchu: yurts, archery ranges, and shaman rituals convey an authentic picture of this nomadic warrior culture before it conquered all of China. The Sarhu Landscape Park at Dahuofang Reservoir offers relaxation amidst wooded hills: boat trips, hiking trails, and the ruins of the historic Sarhu Fortress, where the decisive battle took place in 1619 that initiated the rise of the Manchu.
