About Guiyang

Guiyang is the capital of Guizhou Province in southwestern China and the gateway to one of the country's most ethnically diverse and scenically spectacular regions. The city is located on a plateau at about 1,100 meters above sea level, which gives it a pleasant climate year-round — Guiyang is referred to as the cool capital of China. The Huangguoshu Waterfall, about 2.5 hours southwest of Guiyang, is the largest waterfall in China at 77.8 meters high and 101 meters wide, and one of the largest in Asia. Unique is the natural tunnel behind the waterfall (Water Curtain Cave), through which visitors can step directly behind the cascading waters. Guizhou is home to the Miao and Dong peoples, who live in picturesque villages with traditional wooden architecture. The Miao are famous for their elaborate silver jewelry — at festivals, women wear silver crowns and chains weighing up to 15 kilograms. The Dong people are known for their Wind and Rain Bridges (Fengyu Qiao), covered wooden bridges constructed without a single nail. The Jiaxiu Pagoda, built in 1598 on a rock in the Nanming River, is the landmark of Guiyang and is beautifully illuminated in the evening. Qianling Park offers 426 hectares of hiking trails through mountain forests, Buddhist temples, and free-roaming macaques. Guizhou cuisine is famous for its spiciness and the use of sour fish (Suan Tang Yu), fermented chili products, and unique dipping sauces. Guiyang is considered one of the most exciting culinary destinations in China by food enthusiasts.
