About Huizhou

Huizhou is a historic city in the southern Chinese province of Guangdong, located about 80 km east of Shenzhen and Hong Kong. The city has over 1,400 years of history and was once a significant center for trade and culture in the Pearl River Delta. The Huizhou West Lake (Xi Hu) is the city's landmark — a picturesque lake often compared to the more famous West Lake in Hangzhou. The poet Su Dongpo (Su Shi) lived here for three years in exile during the Song Dynasty and wrote numerous poems about the beauty of the lake. Temples, pavilions, and gardens line the shores. Luofu Mountain (Luofu Shan) is one of the ten most famous Taoist mountains in China and is located about 70 km northwest of Huizhou. With over 400 peaks, waterfalls, and ancient temples, it is a paradise for hikers and culture enthusiasts. The Chongxu Temple complex on Luofu Shan has been a significant Taoist shrine since the Jin Dynasty. The hot springs of Longmen are another highlight: The area around Longmen offers numerous thermal resorts where natural hot spring water is used for bathing — a welcome relaxation after hiking in the mountains. Xunliao Bay on the coast features fine sandy beaches and turquoise waters — a popular weekend destination for residents from Shenzhen and Guangzhou, still largely unknown to international tourists.
